Julius Robert von Mayer,

If you write down the name,
Julius Robert von Mayer,

A German physicist. He believes that heat and work can be converted to each other, and is well known for the law of conservation of energy and Mayer’s relations for specific heat.

First, Meyer studied medicine at the University of Tubingen. He liked experiments, and Meyer also took chemistry lectures in addition to medicine at university. He also seems to have organized a student union and confronted the authorities at the same time. As a result, Meyer will be suspended.

Mayer and Energy

However, Meyer seemed to have had a good time taking advantage of his suspension period without losing. He is a reluctant man. Later, Meyer became a surgeon in the Dutch colony to spread his knowledge. During his voyage in the East Indies, Meyer notices something. The venous blood of the phlebotomized sailors had a brighter red color than that of cold regions. Meyer’s hypothesis is

① Blood is red when there is a lot of oxygen in the blood

② There is too much oxygen in the tropics
Isn’t it necessary?

③ To maintain body temperature in the tropics
It requires less oxygen.

Therefore, further inference about the relationship between heat and exercise suggests that oxygen consumption is related to “maintenance of body temperature” and “results of human exercise”. That’s why I suspected that heat and exercise had something to do with each other. It’s his unique perspective. After that, we will continue to experiment independently.

Meyer broadly captures forces in Newtonian mechanics, heat, and forces derived from electricity, and envisions concepts that will be shown later in terms of workload. He interacts between the physical quantities that have been discussed separately, and later establishes the law of conservation of energy.

Hermann von Helmholtz and Liebig also evaluated Meyer’s achievements, and as a result, Meyer became more widely known. He has also been sent a Copley Medal by the Royal Society. He died at the age of 64 on March 20, 1878, seven years after receiving his medal. “Meyer had an unparalleled importance and widespread insight in the quest for nature,” Ernst Mach said. In particular, the evaluation contributed greatly to the establishment of the concept of energy, and some people evaluated it as an advocate of the concept of energy.
