About Descartes

René Descartes was a philosopher and mathematician born in France.
And. He is also the founder of rationalist philosophy.
He is generally known as the founder of early modern philosophy.

He is famous for saying, “I think, therefore I am. It is a proposition that considers the subject and object of contemplation.

This is a proposition that differs greatly from the viewpoint of Scholastic philosophy, which was the mainstream at the time.

According to the Scholastic philosophy, faith is an act that is originally formed by offering oneself.

Faith leads to the acquisition of “truth” that cannot be created by human beings.

Descartes questioned the conservatism of the scholastic philosophy

and Descartes questioned the conservatism of scholastic philosophy and formulated a new philosophical proposition.

Just as the sun’s rays fall on the earth. As the sun’s rays fall on the earth,

the natural activity of human reason Descartes’ belief is that

we can come closer to the truth through the natural activity of human reason,

just as the sun’s rays fall on the earth.

scholl days of Descartes

Descartes belonged to the school of the Jesuits,

where he studied. He first entered the Jesuit Institute of La Flèche.

At the time, there were 15 Jesuit schools in France.

Among them was the famous La Flèche Institute, where King Henry IV of France himself had involved.

There, excellent teachers and students gathered at that Jesuits.

Protestantism is based on the doctrine that “faith and attitude cannot be reconciled.

The Jesuits, on the other hand, were catholic, and they adopted reason

as an aggressor and incorporated scholastic philosophy into their educational curriculum.

They also favored ideas that advanced the natural sciences,

and celebrations they held at the Institute when Galileo Galilei first observed

the moons of Jupiter through his telescope.

In the doctrine of the Institute where they taught Descartes, philosophy was incomplete.

In the doctrine of the Institute where Descartes was taught,

philosophy is incomplete and “needs philosophy for its perfection”.

Descartes studied logic, metaphysics, natural science, astrology, and the mystic arts

(the lineage of what we now call witchcraft) at the Institute.

He was especially fond of mathematics in the natural sciences,

and sometimes used mathematical arguments in his discussions.

itinerancy of Descattes

After acquiring such a basic education, Descartes spent a period of itinerancy.

At the age of 22, Descartes joined the army in the Netherlands.

They said that he would not have fought in actual battles during this period,

as it was a period of truce during the 80 Years War.

Rather, Descartes had been interested in the development of the latest weapons in the army.

It seems that his goal was to interact with excellent engineers and broaden his knowledge.

Meet with Beekman

Descartes then met Isak Beekman, they gave an intellectual stimulus with each other.

Beekman was a doctor. Beekman also had knowkedge in the natural sciences and mathematics.

Descartes learned the following concepts from Beekman.
(1) the concept of the atom,
(2) the concept of the vacuum, and
(3) the concept of the conservation of motion.

These are concepts that lead to modern physics.

It was during this period that Desvarts got the “foundation” for such concepts.

And Beegman was sympathetic to and directed Copernicus’ ideas.

Descartes developed his ideas together with Beegman.

He gained insight into free fall, he gained insight into water pressure,

and he also developed mathematical concepts such as cubic equations.
